- November 1: The series, Storytime with Barney, is released to stores.
- November 6: Barney's Big Surprise! Live on Stage is released and exclusively sold during the tour of the same name.
- December 17: Run, Jump, Skip and Sing is available for retailers to pre-order for stores.

- April 1-14 (excluding April 9): Barney appears at Australia's Wonderland's Kidzfest ‘96 for sing-along shows.[1]
- July 12: Barney attends the 15th Annual Video Software Dealers Association (VSDA) Convention and Expo at Los Angeles Convention Center in Los Angeles, California.[2]
- August 30: Barney performs three shows at the Baby & Toddler Show at the National Exhibition Centre in Birmingham, England.[3]
- September 9: Barney visits Cook Children's Medical Center in Fort Worth, TX. [4]
- September 10: Barney's Big Surprise begins its tour at the Will Rogers Memorial Center in Fort Worth, Texas.
- November 28: During the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, Barney, Baby Bop, and BJ appear on the wild west float.
- December 8: Barney appears at La Gran Parada de Navidad in Puerto Rico.

- January 23: Barney's All Aboard for Sharing is released to stores.
- March 26:
- Barney's Talent Show is released to stores.
- Barney's Campfire Sing-Along, Barney Goes to School, Barney in Concert, and Rock with Barney, are re-released and have new previews.

- Kids for Character is released to stores.
- Barney's Fun & Games is available for retailers to pre-order for their stores.
- May 21: Barney's Fun & Games is released to stores.

- November 4: Coscient Group is announced to have an agreement distributing Barney merchandise and videos via Barney Home Video Canada and Lyons Group in Canada.[5]
- December 17: Barney's Sense-Sational Day is available for retailers to pre-order for stores.

- December 1: A new line of Barney apparel from the Haddad Apparel Group was announced to debut at Barney Boutiques in Sears stores across the United States, as well as Mervyn’s outlets during the holiday season. ‘Lil Things locations and other retailers picked up the line the following year.[6]
